Discover Casa Milà

La Pedrera - Casa Milà is the most emblematic civil engineering work by the architect Antoni Gaudí and one of his most innovative pieces. It was built between 1906 and 1912 on Passeig de Gràcia in Barcelona, commissioned by Pere Milà and Roser Segimon. The building housed illustrious tenants and various businesses for decades before becoming a UNESCO-listed cultural site.

Today it is open to the public for self-guided or guided tours on a daily basis, as well as hosting many temporary art exhibitions.

History of La Pedrera

Casa Milà is Gaudí’s most emblematic civil building, both for its constructive and functional innovations and for its ornamental and decorative solutions, which break away from the architectural styles of its time. With this building, Gaudí introduced new approaches in the fields of construction, spatial geometry, habitat, ergonomics, materials, and inspiration.

Casa Milà has always stood out as unique and distinctive within Catalan Modernism, sparking intense debates between those who defended its groundbreaking aesthetics and those who criticised it for defying the stylistic conventions of the early 20th century.

Today, Gaudí’s Casa Milà is one of the most admired and visited architectural icons in Barcelona, attracting thousands of visitors who, year after year, are captivated by its unmistakable silhouette.

Conservation of the building

La Pedrera Conservation

Conservation of the building

Over the years, La Pedrera has suffered the stresses of its urban environment: the passage of time, the rains and pollution have marked its stone and decorative elements. In order to preserve its unique structure, continuous conservation programmes have been implemented, including pathology studies and analysis of materials, non-invasive cleaning of the limestone and the application of water-repellent treatments.

Structural reinforcements and interior restorations are also being carried out, including the recovery of the wrought iron. Periodic inspections of the rooftop complete the comprehensive maintenance, guaranteeing its exterior beauty and the richness of its rooms.
