La Pedrera, heritage

Casa Milà “La Pedrera” has been a UNESCO Cultural World Heritage site since 1984 because of its exceptional universal value. For the celebration of the 30th anniversary of the inclusion of the Casa Milà on the UNESCO world heritage list, the Catalunya La Pedrera Foundation has incorporated a specific area devoted to World Heritage into its Espai Gaudí.

This heritage anniversary has also coincided with the completion of the restoration works on the façade of La Pedrera. The restoration, promoted by Catalunya La Pedrera Foundation, shows the foundation’s desire to maintain and preserve one of Antoni Gaudí’s most emblematic civil buildings for future generations.

Casa Milà, popularly known as «La Pedrera» (the stone quarry), an ironic allusion to the resemblance of its façade to an open quarry, was constructed between 1906 and 1912 by Antoni Gaudí (1852-1926). For its uniqueness, artistic and heritage value has received major recognition and in 1984 was inscribed on UNESCO World Heritage List, for its exceptional universal value. Nowadays is the headquarters of Fundació Catalunya-La Pedrera and houses a cultural centre that is a reference in Barcelona for the range of activities it organises and the different spaces for exhibitions and other public uses it contains.
