Types of cookies depending on the entity that manages them:
• Own cookies: these are those that are sent to the user’s device from a computer or domain managed by the owner of the website from which the service requested by the user is provided.
• Third-party cookies: these are those that are sent to the user’s device from a computer or domain not managed by the owner of the website providing the requested service, but by another entity that processes the data obtained through the cookies. Likewise, if cookies are installed from a computer or domain managed by the website owner but the information collected through them is managed by a third party, they will also be considered third-party cookies.
Types of cookies according to their purpose:
• Technical cookies: these are those that allow the user to navigate through a website, platform or application and use the different options or services available, including those that the publisher uses to manage and operate the website and enable its functions and services, such as, for example, controlling traffic and data communication, identifying the session, accessing restricted areas, remembering the elements of an order, carrying out the purchasing process of an order, managing payment, controlling fraud related to service security, registering or participating in an event, counting visits for the purposes of software license billing, using security elements while browsing, storing content for the dissemination of videos or sound, enabling dynamic content (for example, loading animation of text or images), or sharing content through social networks.
Also included in this category, due to their technical nature, are those cookies that allow the most efficient management possible of advertising spaces which, as just another element of the design or “layout” of the service offered to the user, the publisher may have included in a website, application or platform based on criteria such as edited content, without collecting user information for other purposes, such as personalising that advertising content or other content.
• Preference or customisation cookies: these are those that allow information to be remembered so that the user accesses the service with certain features that may differentiate their experience from that of other users, such as language, the number of results to be displayed when the user performs a search, the appearance or content of the service depending on the type of browser used to access the service or the region from which the service is accessed, etc.
• Analytics or measurement cookies: these are those that allow their controller to monitor and analyse the behaviour of users of the websites to which they are linked, including the quantification of advertising impacts. The information collected through this type of cookie is used to measure the activity of the websites, applications or platforms, with the aim of introducing improvements based on the analysis of the data on use made by users of the service.
• Behavioural advertising cookies: these are those that allow the most efficient management possible of the advertising spaces on the website. These cookies store information on user behaviour obtained through the continuous observation of their browsing habits, which allows a specific profile to be developed to display advertising based on the same.
• Geolocation cookies: these are used to determine the location of a user when requesting a service. This cookie is anonymous and is used, for example, to provide appropriate information depending on the country in which the user is located.
Types of cookies depending on the length of time they remain active:
• Session cookies: these are designed to collect and store data while the user accesses a website. They are usually used to store information that is only useful to keep for the provision of the service requested by the user on a single occasion (for example, a list of purchased products) and disappear at the end of the session.
• Persistent cookies: these are those in which the data remains stored on the device and can be accessed and processed for a period defined by the controller of the cookie, which may range from a few minutes to several years.
