From 2 October 2026, La Pedrera – Casa Milà hosts the new Anselm Kiefer exhibition, featuring one of the most prominent figures in European contemporary art.
The exhibition brings together a selection of around 40 pieces mainly from the private collection of Hans Grothe, one of the most important dedicated to the German artist, complemented by works from other private collections.
Curated by Walter Smerling, the Anselm Kiefer exhibition in Barcelona brings visitors closer to the artist's complex creative universe through his monumental showcases, which form part of the Opus Magnum series and are created using unusual materials and objects laden with profound symbolism.
Who is Anselm Kiefer? Life and work
Born in 1945 in Donaueschingen, Germany, Anselm Kiefer is a fundamental figure in European contemporary art. His career is closely linked to the events that shook Europe in the second half of the 20th century and the taboo subjects of German historical memory following the Second World War and the Holocaust.
Throughout his career, Kiefer has tackled all manner of themes through a visual language laden with symbolism. Mythology, religion, history, literature, poetry, science, and humankind's relationship with nature are just some of the subjects that shape his artistic thought.
Kiefer's work is also characterised by great freedom in using different materials, whether in painting, sculpture, or installations. Lead is one of the most iconic, though he also frequently uses straw, ash, glass, clay, and everyday objects. In addition to their formal role, these materials help build the meaning of each piece, evoking processes and emotions.
One of the key elements of Kiefer's work is that it does not seek to provide closed, straightforward interpretations; instead, it invites the viewer to break the silence and ask questions. In his creations, destruction and decay coexist with regeneration, becoming symbols of the passage of time.
His artistic practice also stands out for the synergy between different disciplines and media, such as painting, sculpture, installation, and photography.

The Anselm Kiefer exhibition at La Pedrera presents a generous selection of works that provide insight into the main themes of his creative universe.
The visit centres on the Opus Magnum series, composed of monumental showcases created with objects, materials, and organic elements. These transparent structures allow viewers to observe lead, concrete, stones, tree roots, or burnt books, among other items. Elements that may seem ordinary take on a new dimension when integrated into the work, creating compositions that speak to memory, renewal, hope, or loss. The showcases often represent opposing concepts: they are transparent yet dense, light yet heavy, and the objects they contain are both readily recognisable and enigmatic in essence.
The exhibition is rounded off with a series of paintings dedicated to Robert Fludd (1574–1637), the English polymath, physician, and poet who studied the connections between science, philosophy, and spirituality. Fludd's philosophy resonates with several of Kiefer's recurring interests.

The Anselm Kiefer exhibition can be visited at La Pedrera – Casa Milà from 2 October 2026 to 24 January 2027, from 10:00 to 19:30, except on 25 December when the exhibition will remain closed.
Last admission is at 19:00. On 1 January 2027, opening hours will be from 11:00 to 19:30.

This area, not accessible on the general tour, allows you to admire original Gaudí features such as stone columns and decorated ceilings.
