Dancing architecture: the restoration reconnecting the Giants of La Pedrera with Gaudí’s universe
Created in 1998 by master craftsman Toni Mujal, the Giants of La Pedrera were conceived from the outset as a living tribute to Antoni Gaudí’s building. Inspired by the shapes and features of the famous Rooftop, the kings Rei Gaudí and Reina Pedrera, the warriors Badalot and Forjat, and the dwarfs Trenca and Dis have become true landmarks of Barcelona’s popular culture.
Coinciding with the Gaudí Year, the Fundació Catalunya La Pedrera and the Coordinadora de Colles Geganteres de Barcelona present the result of seven months of intensive restoration on 13 September at 19:00, in front of La Pedrera. This intervention, the most significant in over two decades, has been an exercise in fidelity and reinterpretation of the modernist masterpiece.
A direct dialogue with stone and texture
The restoration has not only helped to consolidate the structures of the six figures, but also recovers the colours and motifs of the original project. Among the most notable updates is the restoration of the original stone tone of the two warriors, Badalot and Forjat, alongside a complete renewal of the costumes, jewellery and accessories by designer Marc Udina, Goretti Puente’s theatrical wardrobe team, the José María Sánchez workshop, and Taller Lacedemon.
These new designs are directly inspired by the organic shapes, mouldings, fabrics, and interior and exterior ornamentation of Casa Milà, strengthening an unbreakable bond between the festive troupe and the monument.
A new chapter for the festive troupe
Beyond the artistic enhancement, the unveiling of this new look marks the beginning of a partnership with the Coordinadora de Colles Geganteres de Barcelona, the entity that will oversee the figures’ future appearances to ensure their active presence in the city’s major festive celebrations, such as the Cavalcada de la Mercè.
