TIO

Yes, it’s true. We’re not making it up. This log, which is dressed with a hat and is called Tió, "poops" presents. This peculiar tradition is still widely popular in Catalonia, especially among children. For it to "poop" presents, you just need to feed it well, then sing a song while you kick it with a stick, easy!

CHRISTMAS TREE

For many families, putting up and decorating the Christmas tree is an event in itself. This tradition, which can be traced back to XVIth century Germany, is quite new for all of us and you might be surprised to know it was Queen Victoria who made it so popular. At the beginning, Christmas trees were decorated with apples, candles, and even stones! And you, how do you decorate your Christmas tree?

TRADITIONAL CHISTMAS FOOD

A very Catalan Chistmas menu: 1st course, escudella ( meat and vegetable broth with pasta shells). 2nd course, roast chicken. Dessert: nougat candy and neules (traditional wafers in the shape of a tube). We won’t waste any food because we’ll use all the leftovers to make Boxing’s Day very typical cannelloni.

On Epiphany Day, it’s the Tortell de Reis (King’s Cake) that steals the show. This sweet breed, traditionally with candied fruit and in the shape of a ring, has a surprise inside. You might be crowned king or queen for the day, or you might be unlucky and get the bean – then you’ll have to pay the cake next year! And don’t forget to make a toast with a good glass of cava, cheers!

TWELFTH NIGHT

Haven’t you sent your letter to the Three Wise Men yet? If you haven’t had time, don’t worry, you can give it to them in person on Twelfth Night, during their parade. This very night, and only if you have been good, the Three Wise Men will visit every house and bring presents. But mind you, those of you who haven’t behave will only get coal!
