La Pedrera, an essential visit to understand Gaudí

A visit to Casa Milà, popularly known as ‘La Pedrera’ (the stone quarry), building and landmark of the worldwide architecture, allows us to understand and to know in depth the work of Antoni Gaudí, and in particular his last civil work, La Pedrera.

A visit to La Pedrera by day includes two distinct museum spaces: The Espai Gaudí and the La Pedrera Apartment, along with the Courtyards -Provença and Passeig de Gràcia-, the Exhibition Hall and the Roof-Terrace. The Espai Gaudí, located in the attic, provides an overview of Gaudí's work, showing the most basic aspects of his way of understanding architecture, eminently visual and empirical, through models, audiovisuals and objects. The tour is divided into seven areas, one of which is devoted entirely to Casa Milà. The La Pedrera Apartment recreates the life and the flat of a bourgeois family of Barcelona in the first third of the twentieth century. Currently you can also visit the former residence of the Milà’s, which nowadays hosts the temporary Exhibition Hall.

Casa Milà is the only interpretation center of Gaudí in Barcelona dedicated to understand the work of this great architect. In total you can visit 4,500 m2 divided between five floors. The only areas that cannot be visited are the private homes and the offices that still holds this building.

Casa Milà, popularly known as «La Pedrera» (the stone quarry), an ironic allusion to the resemblance of its façade to an open quarry, was constructed between 1906 and 1912 by Antoni Gaudí (1852-1926). For its uniqueness, artistic and heritage value has received major recognition and in 1984 was inscribed on UNESCO World Heritage List, for its exceptional universal value. Nowadays is the headquarters of Fundació Catalunya-La Pedrera and houses a cultural centre that is a reference in Barcelona for the range of activities it organises and the different spaces for exhibitions and other public uses it contains.
